Newsreel archive British Pathé has uploaded its entire collection of 85,000 historic films, in high resolution, to its YouTube channel. This unprecedented release of vintage news reports and cinemagazines is part of a drive to make the archive more accessible to viewers all over the world.
“Our hope is that everyone, everywhere who has a computer will see these films and enjoy them,” says Alastair White, General Manager of British Pathé. “This archive is a treasure trove unrivalled in historical and cultural significance that should never be forgotten. It appears that Waitrose intends to destroy the heart and business of Heswalls town center shops, not to mention the library and fire station! Where is a local councillor when you need one? The following is an extract from the Heswall Society web site.
The new store would be two storey with sales floor above a ground floor car park.
The size of the sales area would be 2.5 times that of the nearby M&S Store.
The new store would be situated in front of Heswall Hall on Telegraph Road. The building would extend over the Bowling Green and the present Fire Station (which would be demolished)..
The Library would be demolished to make way for an access road. The library would be replaced at the northern end of the new building.
Traffic would exit from the site via Mount Avenue
There are not many details available about this.
The proposed store is to be situated behind the Heswall Bus Station on Pye Road.
Little more is known. Nor is the fate of the Johnny Pye Pub known.
